Rider Spotlight: Hailey Guard

Q: How did you get started in the equestrian world?

I was horse-obsessed from the very beginning. As soon as I started kindergarten, my mom signed me up for my first riding lessons. From that moment on, horses became a lifelong passion.

Q: Do you have any pre-ride or pre-show rituals (or even good luck charms)?

Definitely! Before a show, I always listen to a specific playlist while I braid my competition horses. It sets the tone for the day, helps me stay calm and focused, and the horses seem to enjoy the routine as much as I do. It’s a small ritual, but one that really grounds me before heading into the ring.

Q: Who is someone you look up to in the equine world and why?

Jim Koford is someone I’ve admired for a long time. He’s known for taking horses that aren’t considered “typical” and helping them reach incredible levels of success. I respect his enthusiasm for recognizing raw talent, regardless of a horse’s breeding, and his ability to pinpoint exactly what a horse needs within minutes of watching them. His adaptability and passion for the sport inspire me.

Q: What’s your favorite Equinavia product and how does it support your ride?

Hands down, the Victoria Breeches! Summers in North Carolina are hot and humid, and these breeches make all the difference. They’re breathable, comfortable, and still give me the grip I need in the saddle. I wear them both for schooling and competition—they’re my go-to no matter the ride.

Q: What’s one surprising fact about you outside the barn?

Here’s a fun one: while I was living in Georgia, I worked for The Vampire Diaries for two seasons! It was such a different world from the barn, but an unforgettable experience.
